Description
7 Piece Silver Plated Chafer set. Dated between 1898 to 1928 This Beautiful Silver Plated Holloware piece was created between 1898 and 1928. It was made by the International Silver Co. (I. S. Co.) that was a Company created by several American Silver Companies that decided to merge together. The I. S. Co. was started in 1898 and ended in 1941. As you see the Wilcox stamp and the E.G. Webster & Son stamp is also on the piece. Both Companies were part of the I. S. Co. as well with many other important and well known Companies when the I. S. Co. was first created. The Wilcox Silver Plate Co. ( 1865-1941 ) still continued to put it's individual stamp on the pieces it made even though it was a part of the I. S. Co. The Company met with many changes thru the years and finally came to an end after World War II due to the Metal Shortage. Several pieces were made for Wilcox from other Companies but in 1961, the Company changed it's trademark to Webster-Wilcox. The company had many stamps that it used for the different items it made. The stamp on the Chafer set is one of it's earlier dated ones. The Company of E. G. Webster & Son ( 1860-1928 ) founded by Elizur G. Webster formed E. G. Webster & Brother in 1865. Incorporated in 1867 as Webster Manufacturing Co. and helped form the International Silver Co. It was then sold off to the International Silver Co. in 1928. The E. G. W. & S stamp that is on the Chafer is one of the earlier stamps used by the Company. Since it is stamped by all three Companies that leaves it to have been created between the dates of 1898 and 1928 when all three stamps would have been used. I am not positive but since two of the stamps used were of earlier styles I would guess that it would make the Chafer Set more in the 1898 to 1915 time frame. Since Silver will tarnish and with some people when they touch it, it will tarnish very quickly due to body chemistry but with others it never tarnishes. Silver plating will be a metal called "rhodium" which is very bright or another metal recently used on silver that looks more the color of Silver. It is often used on Copper and sometimes Tin. This piece has a Copper base since heat is used in its normal service. When a Sterling Silver piece is tarnished it will turn grey (Coin Grey), but when it is plated it will turn green. With the Cleaning of this piece I personally like using Wright's Silver Cream. I will use a very soft toothbrush for the edges and ridges and a soft cloth for the smooth areas. There are a few scratches and a few worn spots. There is one small spot on the inside of the main dish were the silver is worn off but that is the sign of it's age and of it's normal use over the years. It is still in wonderful condition and both wooden handles are in excellent shape. It is a rare piece in which the base is round and not on legs which gives it a more sturdy and as well as a more pleasing look. It is guaranteed to give many more years of use and pleasure from it's beauty and elegance. Please email me at: dmvg@gotgizzmo.com if you have any questions.Stamped by: Wilcox Silver Plate Co.
