Description
Amazingly detailed solid brass sculpted incense chest. Standing on four legs, each of which has a face that tapers to a claw foot, the base has a bombe shape. On the long sides, there is a devilish face in the center that has scaley arms or legs. Stylized lotus blossoms are incorporated into the end borders. The short sided ends have a stylized floral motif. The top piece (also with a bombe shape) has a worm like creature (or it could be a baby dragon) with a wing and scroll design. The short sides of the top have the same floral pattern as a the base, but in a reduced size. The handle on the top is a deer like animal that has an all over floral pattern. The winged like handles on either end of the base have a Greek key design. The top has holes to allow the incense to escape or to use as holders for sticks. The box is heavy, weighing approximately two pounds. It is approximately 6 1/2" long, 5 1/2" tall and 3" wide. It has a wonderful patina, (I am sure if you prefer, you could polish it as it is solid brass). It has a manufacturer's stamping on the underside. I am not sure if it is Japanese or Chinese, but it is in Oriental script. This very unique piece caught my eye at an estate auction. I thought beside being very practical (if you are into incense), it truly was an aesthetic delight. Great piece for a decorative accent. I have tried to be accurate and complete in my description and pictures. Should you have any question, please email me. Thanks for looking! Because I am downsizing, I am looking for homes for some of the treasures that I have accumulated over the years. Your wonderful piece will be carefully wrapped and shipped from a smoke free home. Should you choose USPS as your shipping carrier, I do require that you purchase insurance to protect your investment and mine. If you choose UPS as your shipping carrier, your purchase is insured up to $100 at no additional cost. Additionally, I do charge a nominal fee for packaging and handling to cover my costs.
