This magnificent Iranian tile panel made up of 4 separate tiles depicts four horsemen playing polo surrounded by flowers, plants and landscape elements within an inner intricately shaped frame of blue green against an off white background. The inner frame is surrounded by a second blue square frame with corner detail flowers, branches and leaves in relief. The third and outside frame is a blue green with a stylized floral relief decoration and a white line on either side. Glazes are blue green, light medium blue, turquoise, rose, yellow, gray green, brown, yellow orange, yellow green, light green and black. The tiles are in excellent condition. Each tile measures about 10 1/2 in. x 10 in. x 1 in. The weight of all 4 is 20 lb. This tile panel is Qajar and has been made at Shiraz and Tehran where such panels have been made since the mid 19th century. This panel probably would date from the early to mid 20th century. The clay was based on a soft local limestone that fires at a relatively low temperature producing a somewhat porous body. A layer of tin glaze was brushed over the tile and the design painted on using metallic oxides. A further layer of lead based glaze was applied over the painting.
